Backyard compost systems typically finish ordinary kitchen and yard scraps in about 3–12 months, depending on how often the pile is turned, the mix of “greens” and “browns,” and local climate.

By contrast, commercial composting facilities operate at controlled temperatures and moisture levels so that certified compostable packaging usually disintegrates within roughly 2–4 months, and in many cases within a regulatory window of up to about 180 days.

In home compost, thin uncoated fiber items like simple bamboo or bagasse clamshells may take several months or more to decompose fully, often at the slower end of the 6–12‑month range because backyard piles rarely maintain the high heat of industrial systems.

Thicker molded fiber containers, PLA‑lined paper cups, and other coated ware may not break down completely in a home bin at all, so many authorities advise sending these to industrial compost where available rather than relying on household systems. 

Industrial composting of biodegradable packaging

Industrial composters mix feedstocks, actively aerate piles, and maintain thermophilic temperatures so that many plant‑fiber food containers reach high levels of disintegration within 60–90 days, often faster than food scraps alone.

Bioplastics designed for rigid or film packaging commonly require at least 8–12 weeks of high‑temperature treatment to meet standards such as ISO 20200 or ASTM‑type disintegration criteria, and some may still lag behind plant‑fiber items in real‑world facilities.
